Ladyhawke (1985)

Set in 14th Century Europe, this fairytale focuses on the star-crossed lovers Navarre (Rutger Hauer) and Isabeau (Michelle Pfeiffer) who are cursed by the insanely jealous Bishop to be ‘always together, eternally apart’; Navarre is a wolf by night and Isabeau a hawk by day.

On their travels they meet the thief Philippe ‘The Mouse’ (Mathew Broderick), that comes up with the scheme to break the spell and unite the two.

This film stars Burt Lancaster as a man on the edge of being a hopeless drunk, David Niven as an English gentleman who’s made a pretend past for himself, Deborah Kerr as a shy woman dominated by her mother and Wendy Hiller as the owner of the inn where all of these characters abide.  Rita Hayworth, a woman with her own problems, arrives to stir things up.

Grand Hotel (1932)

This all star cast film chooses the setting of the Grand Hotel in Berlin.  John Barrymore plays the Baron, charming playboy to the world and desperate burglar on the side.  He inadvertently touches the lives of a dieing man (Lionel Barrymore), a young stenographer (Joan Crawford) and a lonely ballerina (Greta Garbo), who he himself shares a brief but wonderful love.

Jailhouse Rock (1957)

Released in 1957, this movie depicts Elvis Presley as a construction worker, who while trying to defend a woman in a bar, accidentally kills a man.  While in prison a fellow inmate helps him discover his singing talent, that leads him into stardom on his release.  But time in the Big House has made him bitter and unscrupulous.

Containing one of his most famous dance numbers, it is also considered to be Elvis’s best film.

You Can’t Take It With You (1938)

Frank Capra directs this 1938 film based on the hit play of the same name.

James Stewart plays the son of a wealthy ammunition supplier, who needs to buy out all the houses in a twelve block area.  Jean Arthur is the daughter of an eccentric family, that are the only ones that won’t sell their house.  The two develop a romance that leads to chaos in a restaurant, the destruction of a basement full of homemade fireworks and lands both of their families in jail.

This movie won the Academy Award for best picture and also features the legendary Lionel Barrymore.
